People always wonder how wine can be made so clear. If you’re one of those who make their own wine, you will be aware of fermentation through which wine is made but during which bits of debris tend to collate at the bottom of the wine. For winemakers, this factor is purely natural and acceptable as a part of the entire process but consumers prefer their wine clear. They don’t want to see debris floating inside their wine. Because of these factors, after the fermentation process has been completed, the winemaker will usually clean out the wine before he starts with the process of aging the wine. This cleaning process also tends to have other advantages as well since it increases the shelf life of the wine too.

However, not all is rosy and this process has its disadvantages at the same time. The removal of the floating bits in the wine tends to affect the bouquet of the wine. Despite this and other facts, these bits should be removed in order to make the wine something which can be sold easily. People who make their wine at home also want to make it into something that has a welcoming and inviting appearance.

Several processes are employed in order to make wine as clear as it is in stores. The oldest of these methods is known as racking. This is usually achieved by pouring the wine directly into another bottle and leaving the sediments behind. Bits are usually different things which may be anything from dead yeast, to cellulose, to pieces of skin or stem. It all depends on how well the first racking process goes and you may have to continue this procedure more than once. Red wine tends to be easier to clear out than white wine, red wines may need only a single round of racking before they can be bottled for sale.

Another well known method of cleaning out wine is referred to as fining. If you add a fining instrument to the wine, it starts off the cleaning process. The cleaning agent tends to be a lot heavier than alcohol and water and as such it doesn’t dissolve but it sinks to the bottom. It also attracts the floating debris to stick to it. The process must be carried out very carefully because it tends to disturb the bouquet as well as the flavor of the wine and the ageing process. Fining is a very delicate procedure and it should only be carried out by people who are conversant with the technique and not by people who have no experience with this sort of thing. Different fining instruments can be used in the wine cleaning procedure and they include gelatin, egg white, blood or milk.

Other options exist for people who wish to clear their wine and one of these options is filtering. You filter the wine through something that leaves the wine bits at the bottom. It sounds relatively easy but it must be handled with care as filtering wrongly may leave a clear but tasteless wine behind.

What other ways are there to use my wine like food paring? If you thought that wine is only for drinking, you need to think again. There are many more uses to wine than this.

Drinking wine - Of course, the most common use is still drinking it. However, even here, there are many ways to use. You can have an aperitif wine, which as the name indicates it is supposed to act as an appetizer, and these are usually drank before the meal is served. Then, you will have the red wines which are usually served with dinner – read meat and spicy foods. The red wine can be savored throughout the dinner, because at the end another wine could be served, i.e. the dessert wine. Desert wines are sweeter than normal wines and are consumed along or after the desserts. Lastly, there the white wines too which complement light dishes, such as white meat (fish, chicken). So now you have one type of wine for each type of meals you have!

Cooking with wine – there are many foods that are enhanced by cooking with wine. The wine used for this purpose will have to be not too flavored and not too blasé. A light dish should use a light wine, and a spicy dish should use a heavy wine so the essence of one is not lost in the other. The best part of wine pairings is to achieve that exact balance between the flavor of the wine and that of the dish that is being cooked.

Wine in religious connotation – The Church has use wine as a symbol of Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and crucifixion. A good number of denominations of the Church of Christ (Catholic, Roman Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, and so on) use the wine to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for the world. The Jews too use wine in their religious rituals celebrating the Lord’s Passover.

Celebrating with wine – Champagne is a world most famous wine meant only for celebrations. There is no wedding, no successful sports event, no grand prix, no real celebration actually without the bubbly, as Champagne is nicknamed. Wherever you go across the globe, Champagne has become synonymous with celebration of a grand event.

Making vinegar – The regular made out of wine is a lot better than the synthetic vinegar. The wine-vinegar is done with extra care to hold the flavor of the grapes contained, without loosing sight of the ultimate result required. This is why a good vinegar made out of wine possesses the exact balance between sweetness and sourness. The natural vinegar is tastier, healthier and better flavored than any synthetic vinegar available in the market today.

Look at the above list and you will understand how versatile this beverage is. Right from drinking it to cooking in it, it touches our hearts in many ways than one. On e very critical use is the fact the wine keeps us healthy. It is packed with antioxidants, for which people who consume it regularly do away with cardiac problems and aging. Both of these reasons being good enough to become a life-long fan of this wonderful beverage.

Drinking wine – Of course, the most common use is still drinking it. However, even here, there are many ways to use.
Wine in religious connotation – Jews use wine in almost all holidays. On Passover, There is an obligation to drink four cups of wine (or pure grape juice) during the Seder. This applies to both men and women. The Mishnah says that even the poorest man in Israel has an obligation to drink. The Church has use wine as a symbol of Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and crucifixion. A good number of denominations of the Church of Christ (Catholic, Roman Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, and so on) use the wine to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for the world.

It is packed with antioxidants, for which people who consume it regularly do away with cardiac problems and aging.
Wine has been around for thousands of years. It has been reported that Noah discovered wine making after his ordeal with the flood.

From ancient civilizations to modern times, wine has been produced and enjoyed by many people of all walks of life. The first evidence of wine produced dates back to 6000BC during the Mesopotamian culture. It has been shown that the Mesopotamians were the first people to cultivate grapes.

Although not the first to produce wine, the ancient Egyptians were the first people to record the wine making process. They recorded the harvest of grapes on stone tablets and on the walls of their tombs. It has been reported that their love of wine, forced them to import the grapes that they were unable to grow themselves. It has been recorded that many Pharaohs were buried with bottles of wine with them to assure their journey to the next world be more enjoyable. Just as in modern times, wine was a very social drink in Ancient Egypt.

Wine also played a major role in the religion of Ancient Greece. It was associated with the god Dionysus and was praised by Greek poets, historians and artists. Much like the ancient Egyptians, wine was considered a privilege and only the upper class were permitted to consume it.

During the time of the Roman Empire, the production of wine spread throughout Europe. It was at this time that wine became available to the common citizens. It has been found that the consumption of wine became so popular that some cities built bars on nearly every street just for the purpose of drinking and celebrating wine. Pure red or white wines were unheard of in ancient Rome, instead the Romans believed that adding flavor to their wine was more important than to taste the original flavor of the wine. They began to add flavors such as garlic and onion to their wines.

During the Dark Ages, wine production was made by the efforts of monasteries. As the church expanded, so did their wine production. It was at this time that some of the finest vineyards in Europe began to develop. Due to the fact that Europe lacked a source for clean, safe drinking water, wine was considered to be an important part of everyday life.

During the 17th century, the wine industry saw a brief decline. A supply of clean drinking water was now available so wine was no longer needed as a major part of the daily diet. Politics and religion did not help matters by doing very little to promote drinking wine for pleasure. During the 18th century, wine went through many changes. Because of England’s strained relationship with France, they were without a major source of wine and had to look to Portugal, Holland and South Africa for their wine. Even with having bad relations with England, the wines of Bordeaux began to flourish during the 18th century. Merchants traveled from all over Europe just to get a chance of obtaining Bordeaux wines. As a result Bordeaux made trades for coffee and other sought after items. This cemented their place in the wine making world.

Although the 19th century is considered the golden age of wines, it has been found that many of the French grapevines began to suffer from a mysterious disease at this time. For this reason, some French winemakers moved to the Rioja region of Spain and taught their people the process of wine making.

In modern times, wine is as popular as ever. The process of wine making has developed greatly. After the development of refrigeration, it was easier for wineries to control the temperature of their fermentation process. This enabled high quality wines to be produced anywhere, regardless of the climate.

More countries are producing wine at greater varieties more than ever before. Although the art of wine making has essentially remained the same, every new recipe allows a more unique take on wine and its varieties.

There are many benefits to home wine making. Aside from the health benefits you can get from moderate consumption of wine, home wine making can be quite fulfilling. Home wine making is an enjoyable, educational and satisfying hobby. The process of making wine at home has become more and more popular with the ease of home wine making kits that are now available. Recipes and instructions make the process easy and successful for anyone interested. For wine enthusiasts around the world, creating wine at home provides a sense of fulfillment that for many can be unmatched.
